Sustainable Manufacturing Centre Annual Conference 2016

smc masthead Resource Efficiency in Manufacturing: Opportunities and Challenges 3rd November 2016, Thursday | 8.30am - 4.00pmDevan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability, Halls 1, 2 & 3____________________________________________________________ With the increasing scarcity of natural resources and prices of many critical raw materials, you have only one option: Use fewer resources and optimise their use. To help local companies adapt and ride on this global trend, SIMTech’s Sustainable Manufacturing Conference 2016 (SMC2016), with the theme, "Resource Efficiency in Manufacturing - Opportunities and Challenges" will be held on 3 November 2016, at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability. The conference, aiming to help companies learn more about resource efficiency in manufacturing, is divided into four themes: Opportunities and Challenges, Methodologies, Materials Efficiency, and Water Management. The Foundation for Resource Efficiency - Life-Cycle EngineeringThe effective sustainability strategies have to be based on systemic and closed-looped resource approaches, hence the term, Life-cycle Engineering. Professor Christoph Herrmann, Director of the Institute of Machine Tools and Production (Germany) will give a comprehensive review on how life-cycle engineering has recently became an indispensable tool for sustainability issues in manufacturing. His review will cover the various types of manufacturing resources, from materials, manpower, water, energy to wastes, in a holistic resource management framework. The Disruptive Technology for Sustainability - Material InformaticsMaterials Informatics or Materials Data Science bridges the gap between multiscale models and multiscale experiments. At the same time, the availability and variety of inexpensive sensors, faster and cheaper computing power, cloud, open source and user friendly apps, big data analytics, algorithms, machine learning and artificial intelligence have been expanding exponentially. These, coupled with deep knowledge of diverse manufacturing processes and materials, will enable resources productivity, process efficiency, environmental performance of products and perhaps, zero waste. The Market for Manufacturing Resource Efficiency - Trends and OpportunitiesDriven by the need to enhance resource efficiency, government agencies and businesses are now leading initiatives in sustainable manufacturing. Mr Satish Lele, Senior Vice-President of Frost & Sullivan (Singapore) will be sharing on the market and industry landscape of resource efficiency, from both local and regional perspectives. Green Cities 2016

Co-hosted annually by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and the Property Council of Australia (Property Council), Green Cities is Australia’s premier sustainability conference for the built environment. On 22 – 24 March 2016 we mark a decade of Green Cities, at the Hilton Sydney, with three days of practical site tours, hands-on masterclasses, fun networking events and inspiring speakers. Over the past decade, GBCA has connected the industry with great thinkers and challenged everyone to go beyond. But this year, they will be dialling things up and presenting a conference of disruptive ideas. After all, disruption stands at the intersection of innovation and business-as-usual. A catalyst for change, disruption changes the way we look at things – challenging and creating, sparking new ideas and exposing new possibilities previously unimagined. It’s time to disrupt the status quo, or become it. The choice is yours. For more information, visit!about/c1nes

Standards Adoption Workshop - Greenhouse Gas Quantification & Product Life Cycle Assessment

At the recent COP21 Climate Change meeting in Paris, 195 countries pledged to lower their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in an effort to limit the rise in global average temperature to 2 degrees Celsius — thus avoiding the most devastating consequences of climate change. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong described the agreement as "historic", adding that Singaporeans have a role in protecting the environment. Singapore has set a target of reducing GHG emissions by 36% by 2030 (based on 2005 levels). Singapore businesses need to respond to environmental changes to achieve sustainable growth. Standards will play an increasingly important role in moving businesses to a more climate safe development path. Standards can provide clear guidelines, help structure processes and set quality norms for the rapidly developing field of GHG management. In doing so they help facilitate new green technology markets and more energy-efficient and profitable business practices. This workshop aims to provide updates on the latest revision of ISO 14064 and how organisations could manage and report their GHG’s emissions. Participants could also learn how to determine the environment impact of its product and services using the ISO 14040/44 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Details of workshopDate : January 29th, 2016 (Friday)Time : 1.30 pm to 4.30 pmVenue : Singapore Manufacturing Federation House 2985 Jalan Bukit Merah Room E1.5 and E1.6 Singapore 159457 Do register online by closing date January 26th, 2016 (registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis).
