The Straits Times: Smart meters to check energy use in 20 schools
July 21, 2011
By Feng Zengkun
SMART meters to keep track of energy use will be installed in 20 schools between now and early next year.
Students will also be chosen as energy ambassadors to help identify ways to reduce electricity use in their own schools.
The plan is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) and IBM.
The computer giant is funding the US$100,000 (S$121,000) cost of the project, which is expected to be completed by August next year.
The schools will span different types, with ITE College East the first school to be announced on Thursday.
Under the one-year project, the schools will first establish how much energy they use.

ELEVEN companies have had their products, such as chillers, lamps and window films, certified green under the Singapore Green Building Product certification scheme, the first of its kind to support the existing Green Mark scheme.
Representatives from the companies were presented with certificates at a ceremony held at the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Academy on Wednesday.
Out of the 26 products certified, six belonged to Trane Singapore, which specialises in air-conditioning systems.
Mr Liew Kwong Chin, the business development director, said that the company’s first design criteria is energy efficiency. ‘We aspire to get the highest level of certification, the leadership level, for all our products,’ he added.
So far, the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) has received applications from more than 30 companies for product certification.
To be certified, the products have to be energy, water and resource-efficient, have low carbon emission, and avoid pollution.
