Sustainability considerations have become key requirements in design and construction. The demand for low-carbon solutions has spurred radical innovation in materials and re-engineering of production processes. Central to the evaluation of building products and materials is its carbon footprint, of which the key means of quantifying and communicating carbon performance is through Environmental Product Declarations or EPDs, which provide a standardised way to assess and compare the environmental performance of materials and products across the lifecycle.
SGBC completed the fifth run of the SGBC Industry Course on EPD Literacy on 28 Oct. 2025 at the Singapore Sustainability Academy, which dived into the context, methodology and insights of Building Product Carbon Performance. Led by SGBC Member EnviroSolutions & Consulting, participants from across the built environment value chain gained a clearer understanding of EPDs, including their structure, content, methodology and preparation; as well as acquired fundamental knowledge of life cycle analysis to evaluate the environmental impact of building products. They also took the opportunity to address some of their concerns surrounding EPDs and built environment carbon footprint.
Towards the end of the session, SGBC Member Zevero also shared about their Mentorship Support Grant that can help SMEs build the necessary capabilities to get started with EPDs (more info here).
