Singapore has further cemented its reputation as a leader in green buildings with the appointment of Mr Tan Swee Yiow (陈瑞耀), President of the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) as well as CEO and Executive Director of Keppel REIT Management Limited, to the Board of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), which comprises global leaders on green building in the building and construction industry.
Mr Tan, 57, was elected to the WorldGBC’s Board of Directors for his proven leadership in the green building movement and dedication to improving the sustainability of buildings in Singapore as well as internationally.
Ms Terri Wills, CEO of the WorldGBC, said, “Swee Yiow has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the field of sustainability, and has championed green building as one of the most effective solutions to climate change.
“Our Board of Directors is an influential group of global leaders who work hard to ensure WorldGBC delivers on its mission of green buildings for everyone, everywhere. Swee Yiow has earned his place on the Board through his commitment to, and expertise in, professional governance and sustainability in the sector. I look forward to working with him and our fellow Directors to make that mission a reality.”
Mr Tan said, “I am honoured to represent Singapore on this important international platform, and thank the WorldGBC for this opportunity. I look forward to fostering closer collaboration with industry partners, corporates and green building councils worldwide to further the green building agenda. As a solutions provider for sustainable urbanisation, Keppel places sustainability at the heart of its business. We are committed to supporting efforts by the international community in tackling climate change, and will continue to work with all stakeholders in our journey towards shaping a more sustainable future.”
As the current President of SGBC, Mr Tan has spearheaded outreach efforts to raise public awareness of green buildings. Under his leadership, impactful public-private partnership projects such as the JOULES Smart Centre at Bukit View Secondary School have come to fruition. In addition, Mr Tan is also actively involved in SGBC’s upcoming public engagement campaign focused on climate action, set to be launched in August this year.
Mr Tan also sits on the WorldGBC’s Corporate Advisory Board in his capacity as CEO and Executive Director of Keppel REIT Management Limited. Prior to his current appointment at Keppel REIT Management Limited, Mr Tan was President (Singapore) at Keppel Land and concurrently Head, Keppel Land Hospitality Management.
During his tenure at Keppel Land, Mr Tan played a key role in driving the company’s sustainability efforts. He led in the push for a higher benchmark under the BCA (Building and Construction Authority of Singapore) Green Mark Scheme for Keppel Land’s Singapore projects. He was also instrumental in driving many green initiatives, which included the implementation of a zero capital expenditure scheme for tenants to reduce energy consumption, as well as championing the use of vertical greenery in Keppel’s buildings in Singapore and overseas.
Mr Tan also played a key role in championing the Green Building Innovation Cluster led by the BCA, of which Keppel Land is a partner.
Keppel Land ranked fourth in Corporate Knights’ Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World in 2015 – the first time an Asian company made it into the top 10 in the ranking’s history. In recognition of its commitment to environmental protection, Keppel Land was also conferred the Quality Champion Gold Award (Developer) from 2015 to 2017 by the BCA.
In the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) 2017, Keppel Land topped four categories and also maintained its third position globally among developers, while Keppel REIT ranked second among 13 Asian listed office entities, and third among 52 Asian listed companies. Keppel REIT is also the only REIT that has all its Singapore assets certified Platinum under the BCA Green Mark Scheme. In Australia, all of its operating assets have achieved 5 Stars NABERS (National Australian Built Environmental Rating System) Energy Rating.
Singapore has been previously represented on the WorldGBC Board of Directors, first by Er. Lee Chuan Seng, Founding President of SGBC, and currently by Mr Tai Lee Siang, Past President of SGBC, who is the first Singaporean to be the Chair of the WorldGBC Board.
The WorldGBC works with member green building councils such as SGBC and other organisations to advance green buildings globally, as well as achieve environmental, economic and social goals on a larger, global scale. Comprising senior leaders from 15 Green Building Councils around the world, the Board advises and oversees the WorldGBC’s organisational strategy and governance, as well as ensures that it is operating effectively as a not-for-profit organisation and that it successfully delivers on its mission.
