Survey: Assessing the Market for Low-Carbon Steel in Southeast Asia

Steel Survey

Steel production has a significant environmental impact, contributing approximately 3.7 billion tonnes of CO2 globally since 2019, accounting for 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions. In Southeast Asia, the expansion of traditional, carbon-intensive steel production methods poses a critical challenge to decarbonization efforts. Yet, there’s reason for hope: building market momentum and strong demand signals could drive substantial change in the adoption of sustainable construction materials.

Ramboll, in collaboration with students from the National University of Singapore’s Masters of Environmental Management programme, is embarking on a survey aimed at investigating the willingness to pay for lower-emission steel. The survey seeks to identify challenges and solutions for increasing the availability and adoption of low-carbon steel within key industries such as energy, infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing. Keen insights from the built environment sector will help inform the wider industry on private sector activities, challenges in scaling up demand-side commitments, and the role of government support in these efforts.
