SGBC plays a pivotal role in profiling Singapore as a leading sustainable hub in the tropics through various initiatives and strategies, including Advocacy and Policy Development, Certification and Recognition, International Collaboration, Capacity Building, Training and education Professional development. By showcasing the country’s achievements and promoting best practices, the SGBC contributes to Singapore’s reputation as a sustainable hub in the tropics.

Enhancing Professionalism and Knowledge in Sustainable Development

SGBC is dedicated to promoting green building practices and fostering industry-wide adoption, organising multiple events throughout the year that includes Seminars, Webinars, Learning Journeys, Industry Courses, networking events as well as large-scale conferences. These events align with continuing professional development guidelines and aim to share the latest inudstry trends to empower professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to help shape more sustainable buildings.

Accredited Certification Body for Green Building Products and Services

SGBC launched its first Certification Scheme for green building products in January 2011 and is still the first dedicated Certification Body for Green Building Products and Green Building Services in Singapore to support the Building and Construction Authority (BCA)’s Green Mark scheme. SGBC’s Certification schemes provide a comprehensive listing of robustly assessed and certified green building products and services that are meaningfully differentiated for environmental performance.  In 2024, SGBC was accorded the accredited status by the  Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC) for meeting the standards stipulated in the ISO/IEC 17065: Requirements for Bodies Certifying Products, Processes and Services.

Green Means Go Homeowner Engagement Campaign

As SGBC’s latest major foray into the consumer and end-user space, Green Means Go aims to empower homeowners to make decisions to build green into their homes by establishing and maintaining a resource hub for green homes. Through a suite of interactive activations such as the Singapore Greenest Home Town Challenge and social media tips and tricks on building green in, more than 3 million people have viewed the campaign messaging and many more will continue to do so as Green Means Go transitions to a dedicated resource hub for green homes.

Singapore Built Environment Embodied Carbon Pledge

The Singapore Built Environment Embodied Carbon Pledge was launched in August 2021 to help unify and amplify industry action towards addressing embodied carbon emissions, which will no doubt factor heavily into any corporate sustainability plan. To date, close to 100 organisations from across the built environment sector have come onboard as pledge signatories, all united in their commitment to shape a low-carbon built environment. SGBC has since unveiled a suite of programmes to help pledge signatories tackle their embodied carbon emissions.

2021 Alliance

Alliance for Action on Sustainable Spaces

Launched in November 2021 to bring together stakeholders from across different sectors to create and enhance sustainable spaces, the AfA is in collaboration with the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) and the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), supported by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the National Environment Agency (NEA). The AfA plans to introduce a standard set of guidelines for the industry to shape greener, healthier and more sustainable spaces.

2021 RealEstate

SGBC-REDAS Green Real Estate Trends Conference 2021

Held for the first time in August 2021, the virtual conference convened on the three key trends of Furthering the Impact of Green Buildings, Getting to Net Zero Carbon as well as Sustainability Leadership in Action. The conference featured Singapore-based green building leadership and innovations fronted by leading built environment organisations who shared a wide range of insights and perspectives to nearly 500 attendees across the two-day event period.

2021 Restroom

Enhancing the Sustainability of Public Toilets

SGBC inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Restroom Association (Singapore) in November 2021 to certify restroom products with smart features under the Singapore Green Building Product (SGBP) certification scheme. This certification pathway leverages SGBC’s existing proficiency in green building product certification and complements the RAS’ Happy Toilet Programme for public toilets.

2020 1 Walking the Talk

Walking the Talk: Leading Industry Transformation

The Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) officially opened on 3 February 2020 its new base of operations at the BCA Braddell Campus signalling the Council’s leading role in the transformation of the Singapore built environment. The 330-sqm premises was designed and fitted-out with an emphasis on health and wellbeing, with SGBC Members chipping in with meaningful contributions to help create a sustainable base from which SGBC will continue to advance a greener, healthier built environment.

2020 2 Breaking New Digital Ground

Breaking New (Digital) Ground: SGBC Annual General Meeting 2020 Teleconference

In light of intensified conditions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the SGBC Annual General Meeting 2020 was switched from a traditionally in-person event to a fully digital one. Through a combined effort from the SGBC Board and Secretariat, the Council successfully delivered its first-ever teleconference Annual General Meeting, allowing Members to look back on SGBC’s activities from the safety of their own premises.

Staying Connected: SGBC Webinars

The advent of digitalisation, in part also accelerated by the realities of the global pandemic, brought about a paradigm shift to the way SGBC organises its many events. With input and guidance from the SGBC Board, the SGBC Secretariat swiftly pivoted the Council’s in-person events to fully digital and virtual ones while adding new formats that take full advantage of the digital space. Since the first webinar in March 2020, SGBC has organised more than 20 technical webinar sessions that covered a variety of green building topics, helping upwards of 5000 event participants stay abreast of key industry trends and developments.

Bolstering the Value Chain: Reaching out to Real Estate Agents

In collaboration with the Singapore Estate Agents Association (SEAA), SGBC ran a series of webinars dedicated to imparting essential knowledge on green building to practicing real estate agents. Covering the key areas of quality and sustainability, the webinars also involved case studies from SGBC Founding Member City Developments Limited to help the real estate agents visualise the benefits of green buildings and how to assist their clients in sourcing for green properties.

2020 5 Enhancing Member Value

Enhancing Member Value: Preparing for the New Normal

Pandemic restrictions have disrupted and, in some cases, put a pause on business activity in the construction sector. To help SGBC Members adapt and prepare for the new normal, SGBC put forward a number of tailored activities and programmes. These include briefing sessions for utilizing online meeting software and SafeEntry requirements, SGBC Green15 solution-introduction sessions for solution providers to meet with industry players as well as multiple online short courses to help build capability in areas such as carbon footprint computation.

Strengthening Access to Sustainability

As a new collaboration in the new normal, SGBC inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SGBC Founding Member Singapore Polytechnic (SP) to enable the exchange of technical resources and expertise to efficiently and proactively promote green building products and practices to the industry. Cemented on 11 December 2020 in the presence of Mr. Desmond Lee, Minister for National Development, SGBC and SP will leverage the respective strengths of each organisation to help drive meaningful and impactful change for the built environment sector as well as help Singapore transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient future.

2019 1 SGC 10 Anniversary

SGBC10 10th Anniversary

Celebrating its first major milestone of its relatively young history, SGBC crossed the ten-year mark in 2019. With a special commemorative logo, video productions and a series of #SGBC10 celebratory and commemorative events that took place throughout the year, SGBC’s 10th Anniversary is definitely one to remember. With the industry’s continued and erstwhile support, SGBC has grown from strength to strength from its humble beginnings in 2009. With a strong collaborative spirit, SGBC has germinated from a certification body of green building materials and products to a champion and voice of the green building movement, working with like-minded partners to put forward meaningful, useful and synergistic programmes for the industry and beyond.

Strengthening our Professionals

As a clear signal of SGBC’s expanding role in the industry, the Council officially took over the management of the nation’s green building professionals from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in April 2019. Through a refreshed and enhanced Green Mark Professional Qualification Scheme, green building professionals can look forward to a suite of programmes and initiatives designed to help stay abreast of green building developments.

Addressing the Entire Ecosystem

Although first established to look into the certification of green building products for the local built environment’s growing demand for high performance green buildings, SGBC has expanded its scope to also include the certification of green building service firms, the accreditation of green building professionals and also the co-assessment of actual Green Mark building projects. SGBC now covers the entire green building ecosystem.

A Star Partner in Industry Transformation

SGBC was conferred the Star Partner Award at the Public Sector Transformation Awards 2019, underpinning its emphasis on industry transformation. The Award recognises exemplary citizens, non-government organisations or companies that have contributed to better outcomes for the Public Service, in terms of demonstrating a strong spirit of partnership with the nominating public agency, or as strong advocates for national initiatives. Upon a nomination by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), SGBC received the Star Partner Award 2019 for its complementary work.
