Responsible for 40 percent of global carbon emissions, the built environment plays a significant role in climate change mitigation and adaption. To effectively reduce the carbon footprint of buildings, it is essential for professionals in the built environment sector to have a deep understanding of carbon emissions and how to mitigate them.

Sign up for SGBC’s series of carbon-centric courses designed to equip built environment professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of carbon emissions across three focus areas: Organisations, Building Products and Building Projects.

Understanding Corporate Carbon Footprint for Climate-Related Disclosures

Carbon has emerged as a crucial global metric for addressing and conveying sustainability efforts. Decarbonising an organisation’s operations not only enhances its brand image among investors and customers but is also increasingly vital as goals transition towards achieving Net Zero Carbon. This makes it essential to meet the growing expectation for businesses to actively mitigate carbon emissions in their operations. The proficiency in comprehending and articulating your organisation’s sustainability policies and decarbonisation initiatives are pivotal skills that position your company at the forefront of sustainable practices.

The SGBC Industry Course: Corporate Carbon Footprint for Climate Related Disclosures will equip participants with the know-how to assess the environmental impacts of your organisation. Through this course, participants can expect to gain foundational skills and knowledge needed to compute and prepare carbon emissions data for sustainability reporting, understand sustainability reporting frameworks (GRI and ISSB), as well as climate-related disclosures (IFRS).

This course is ideal for office managers, quality management team, corporate real estate professionals, sustainability professionals, and individuals who are keen to learn about carbon reporting.

EPD Literacy: Context, Methodology and Insights into Carbon Performance of Building Products

Sustainability considerations have become key requirements in design and construction. The demand for low-carbon solutions has spurred radical innovation in materials and re-engineering of production processes.

Central to the evaluation of building products and materials is its carbon footprint, of which the key means of quantifying and communicating carbon performance is through Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). EPDs provide a standardised way to assess and compare the environmental performance of materials and products across the lifecycle.

At this SGBC Industry Course, participants will gain a clear understanding of EPDs, including their structure, content, methodology and preparation; as well as acquire fundamental knowledge of life cycle analysis (LCA) to evaluate environmental impacts. There will be a practical demonstration of how LCA can be conducted and modelled effectively with software (SimaPro).

Understanding Life Cycle Assessment for Building Projects

Carbon emissions are a critical metric for understanding and reducing the environmental impact of buildings. Built environment professionals and practitioners need to understand and conduct life cycle assessments (LCA) for building projects so that the carbon angle can be meaningfully considered in building design and retrofits.

This SGBC Industry Course will provide an understanding of embodied carbon emissions and an overarching view of a building’s life cycle assessment (LCA) through the One Click LCA carbon assessment platform, a world-leading AI-powered LCA tool. It will also touch on the application of environmental product declarations (EPD) on building projects.

Participants will also receive hands-on exercise using the One Click LCA tool to conduct lifecycle assessments of building projects and gain a deeper understanding of potential decarbonisation opportunities. Lastly, participants will learn how to compare and select building materials for their emissions benchmarking and carbon performance.

Hands-On Training with the Building Environment Carbon Calculator (BECC)

The quantification of carbon is key for building project stakeholders to identify carbon hotspots, and be able to take necessary action to minimise carbon emissions by identifying alternative low-carbon solutions to achieve their decarbonisation goals.

In collaboration with BCA, JTC and NUS-ESI, SGBC has co-developed a unified Building Embodied Carbon Calculator (BECC).
The BECC provides the industry with a unified tool to make informed decisions on material and product selections to reduce the carbon footprint of projects for use under the Sustainable Construction section of the Code for Environmental Sustainability of Buildings (Edition 4.0) and the Green Mark 2021 Whole Life Carbon badge.

At this SGBC Industry Course, attendees will gain hands-on experience using the Building Embodied Carbon Calculator (BECC) to quantify the carbon emissions of a real-world building project, equipping them with practical skills to assess embodied carbon emissions.

Hands-On Training with the Mechanical & Electrical Carbon Calculator (MECC)

The quantification of carbon is key for building project stakeholders to identify carbon hotspots, and be able to take necessary action to minimise carbon emissions by identifying alternative low-carbon solutions to achieve their decarbonisation goals. In collaboration with BCA, JTC and NUS-ESI, SGBC has co-developed a unified Singapore Building Carbon Calculator (SBCC), which comprises of both the Building Embodied Carbon Calculator (BECC) and the Mechanical & Electrical Carbon Calculator (MECC). The MECC provides the industry with a unified tool to make informed decisions on material and product selections, especially for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing products, to reduce the carbon footprint of projects.

At this SGBC Industry Course, attendees will gain hands-on experience using the MECC to quantify the carbon emissions of a real-world building project, equipping them with practical skills to assess embodied carbon emissions.
