Can nuclear energy go beyond the grid to reshape how our buildings, data centres, and industrial assets consume power?

This afternoon’s SGBC Seminar, supported by SGBC Member HY M&E Engineering Consultancy, explored exactly this question. We examined the evolving role of nuclear power – not just as a source of electricity, but as a potential catalyst for thermal applications that could fundamentally transform the built environment.

Our speakers delivered two thought-provoking presentations that took us from local frameworks to regional possibilities:

  • From BCA Green Mark to Clean Power: Understanding Nuclear Energy’s Role in a Net-Zero Built Environment â€“ a deep dive into how nuclear energy can align with Singapore’s building sustainability journey
  • Building Energy Resilience: How Can Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) Be Part of the Answer for Southeast Asia? â€“ an exploration of scalable nuclear solutions and their potential to address the region’s unique energy challenges

Together, the presentations moved beyond theory to address tangible milestones for realising behind-the-meter nuclear solutions, particularly for energy-intensive facilities like data centres. Participants from across the building and construction value chain gained insights into the interplay between project development, national strategy, and practical deployment, offering a comprehensive view of what it truly takes to integrate nuclear power into the future of the built environment.
