A new society has been set up to help the public better understand nuclear energy as the Singapore Government assesses whether to adopt this cleaner energy source – a potentially polarising issue.
Nuclear energy is a socially charged topic marked by a gap in general nuclear knowledge and awareness here, said Matthew Chew, president of the Nuclear Learning & Understanding Society (NUCLEUS), which is a ground-up initiative that was formed in September. Matthew is also the Nuclear Competency & Strategy Lead for SGBC Member HY M&E Consultancy Pte Ltd.
The society hopes to host a variety of events for members of the public, including seminars, workshops and networking events, as well as give talks in schools. Matthew spoke at a SGBC Seminar on exploring nuclear energy applications for an evolving built environment on 24 July 2026, which drew nearly 200 industry professionals.
