JTC-SGBC Seminar 2025: Accelerating Decarbonisation in the Built Environment

Accelerating the path to net zero in the built environment requires a comprehensive approach that combines innovation, policy, sustainable finance, and building best practices. To meet evolving demands, the built environment industry must adopt new strategies, embrace emerging technologies, and rethink traditional approaches to design and construction.

On 30 April 2025, nearly 300 built environment professionals turned up for the JTC-SGBC Seminar 2025 at the Matrix Auditorim on Biopolis, one of SGBC’s longest-standing industry collaborations co-organised with JTC Corporation. Attendees actively participated in the Seminar’s proceedings and received a wealth of knowledge from SGBC Members in the speaker lineup, namely:

  • Mr. Alvin Ee from the Energy Studies Institute (ESI) who delved into the Mechanical and Electrical Carbon Calculator (MECC), a specialised tool developed by the industry, for the industry to support comprehensive carbon assessments.
  • Ms Vivian Yang Wei from UOB who explored the critical role on how green finance strategies can accelerate the adoption of low-carbon construction practices.
  • Mr. Victor Low from L-QuBE Pte Ltd who provided a comprehensive summary of the Mandatory Energy Improvement (MEI) regime and upcoming Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).
  • Mr. Ben Moo from Mott MacDonald who spoke about embodied versus operational emissions, design-driven carbon reduction, and priorities for improving operational emissions.

As articulated by SGBC President Mr. Allen Ang, during his welcome address, “Achieving meaningful decarbonisation requires collaboration, innovation, and practical tools. Events like today’s Seminar provide a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and exploring effective strategies to reduce our sector’s carbon footprint.”
