Moving Beyond Manufacturer Claims: Validating Sustainable Material Performance

RAK6

With the growing demand for empirical validation of environmentally friendly materials, a critical challenge for built environment players lies in verifying that actual chemical and structural performance matches up to sustainable product claims.

This afternoon, the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) brought our Green Mark Professionals and SGBC Member representatives on an insightful technical SGBC Learning Journey to R.A.K. Materials Consultants Pte Ltd. Hosted at their accredited laboratory, the session provided a deep dive into the scientific frameworks underpinning sustainable material integrity, testing and verification as well as the circular economy.

Participants moved past the data sheets to observe the rigorous testing and validation processes necessary to ensure structural durability, occupant safety, and safety in low-carbon developments. Key highlights from the learning journey included:

  • Harnessing Carbonation & Toxicity Screening: A close look at safeguarding occupant health and wellbeing through rigorous toxicity screening of construction finishes, attendees explored advanced building material testing and high-precision instrumental techniques like ICP-OES to validate material integrity.
  • Low Carbon Concrete Solutions: An onsite showcase focused on evaluating structural performance to successfully reduce embodied carbon, participants learned about balancing rigorous performance and regulatory compliance standards with sustainable material considerations.

A big thank you to the team at R.A.K. Materials Consultants Pte Ltd for hosting the visit and sharing their extensive technical expertise.
