Science-based targets are just the starting point — not the finish line

An Introduction to SBTi for the Built Environment CREDIT SINGAPORE GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL

Science-based targets are just the starting point — not the finish line. That was a key theme from the recent Singapore Green Building Council panel featuring sustainability leaders from CapitaLand Investment, Frasers Property Singapore, and Climate Asia Pte Ltd.

While many companies focus on achieving Science Based Targets initiative validation, experts stress that real transformation lies in execution, not just target-setting. Key insights from the session include:

  • Start early & build foundations: Centralised data systems, ISO standards, and strong governance are critical first steps.
  • Integrate sustainability across functions: From procurement to capital allocation, decarbonisation must be embedded into daily operations and performance metrics.
  • Targets are just the beginning: The real value of SBTi is the discipline and mindset shift it brings to decision-making, risk management, and opportunity identification.
  • SMEs face unique hurdles: Cost, cash flow, and data resources remain practical constraints — and setting a target without a roadmap is “just a number on paper”.

Bottom line: Successful companies treat sustainability not as a compliance exercise, but as a core business strategy.
